How Does A Spinal Decompression Table Work?

For individuals with chronic back problems, relief sometimes seems unattainable. After months or years of suffering, the quality of life starts to decrease and other areas of the body can start to develop imbalances as they compensate for the weakened spine. At Charleston Chiropractic Associates in Charleston SC, we work to keep these imbalances from developing through supportive chiropractic care. With the use of a spinal decompression table, also called a traction table, you can obtain relief through a non-invasive, non-surgical method.

Spinal Compression

Bulging, herniated disks can create pressure on the nerves and other areas of the spine. As the disks protrude further, they can compress nerves or cause inflammation of the nerve root. Surgical and non-surgical treatment options are used for chronic compression issues and to mitigate the resulting pain.

Whole Person Care

When dealing with a back problem, it is important to assess both the effect and the cause. A spinal issue can originate with the back but can also be a symptom of an imbalance elsewhere in the body. A chiropractor will assess the root cause of your problem before moving forward with a care plan.

Spinal Decompression

After an initial assessment, Dr. Nick's recommended treatment plan could include the use of a spinal decompression table, also known as a traction table. The table is used to enlarge the space between the disks of the spine. Over time, the herniated or bulging disc can then move back into its natural position.

How Does It Work?

A spinal decompression table features multiple sections. During a treatment session, a patient is placed on the table, typically using stabilizing harnesses to minimize movement and properly align the spine. A computer is used to activate the table and its treatment program.

The sections of the table gradually start to separate, causing the back of the person on the table to stretch. The bed of the device is layered with sensors that monitor the back for muscle resistance, and the computer program will make adjustments as needed until it can reach the required level of decompression. This ability to compensate helps increase the efficiency of the method for long-term results.
